The Sun Is Coming Here

I’m walking downtown.
My bike’s in the hands
Of some hopeful clown
Misunderstands
How little depends on fear
When the Sun is Coming Here.

This town is a blur
But I hope it can see
‘Cos a “Nearer,
My God, to Thee”
Is to weak to reach the ear
When the Sun is Coming Here.

The sun was enough;
The stars were enough;
And rocks that we weren’t getting off
To be bringing all of that near:
Sometimes the nights were clear.

(If too hard to hear:
we were not that tough)

I could be lifted in song
Given one final chance
But I’m wishing that on
Some other hands
Burned the blood of this blue sphere
Like the Sun that’s Coming Here.

Communications went down
Several ages ago,
But I’m walking downtown,
I hope you’ll know,
With a sorrow and a cheer
With a sorrow and a cheer:

Because the Sun was enough
The stars were enough
As never my “thank you”‘s for that stuff
Least of all, for you, my dear
Least of all, for you, my dear.
